– Well hello, and welcome to our new, yet temporary, location where we’ll be filming for some time, The Russ Perry Show, I’m so excited to have you here.

In case this is your first time, this is my weekly conversation around the topic of sobriety, but not the whomp whomp topic, although, we can go there sometimes. It is why sober equals success, and if you have already seen the show, you’ll notice we have a little bit of a different set here.

We got a little bit of some urban styling with some exposed wires, I don’t know if you can see that, and some paint mismatched, but we are actually in the new headquarters of Design Pickle. We moved in here last week, I’m super excited.

The only downside is that it’s a very undesigned space, shall we say? We’re working on getting a new look and feel to it, however, we’re in, which is amazing, and actually, last week and over the past two weeks, I had the most relaxing experience. You know why? I didn’t actually move anything. You’re hearing that correctly. I did a move, I moved my entire company from point A to point B, although it was, like, a quarter mile move distance wise, but we hired movers.

Why did we hire movers? Well, it’s a simple fact that I value my time, and I value my team’s time enough to where I don’t want them working on the act and the job of moving stuff. Instead, I wanted that to be paid for by someone else so that I could have them, including myself, work on more valuable activities.

So that’s today’s topic, ladies, and gentleman. We’re gonna be talking about how well you value or don’t value your time and how this ties directly into sobriety. So welcome to episode number 21 of The Russ Perry show. Let’s get started!

– So I have a question for you, and I really want you to take a minute to think about this. What is your time worth? If you are an entrepreneur, this probably could be an easier question to answer than, say, if you’re an employee, but we all have a value associated with our time.

That value could be very literal, like if we’re a consultant and it’s what we charge for an hour’s worth of our time, but then there’s the not so obvious value of our time, the value of our experiences, our insights, our perspective, our leadership, whatever.

There is value from our life that we’ve accumulated to this point that we can now pass on and pay it forward, if you will, whether that’s a formal business relationship or that is just mentorship or commitment to an organization, leadership that you’re giving that experience and giving that to somebody else or sharing that with somebody else. So when I look back at my life and I look at my, I say growth as an adult, the more that I value my time is directly related to my maturity as well as my perception of what’s going on around me.

When I was a teenager, or even when I was an early 20-year-old in college, I can honestly say I didn’t value my time very much. How do I know? Because I spent a lot of it drinking, partying, traveling, dating, playing video games and doing all of these activities that really at the end of the day, once I’m completed with those activities, there’s no impact that I’ve made. I’ve literally accomplished a lot from either a consumption standpoint or I’ve spent a lot of time doing something, but when I’m done with that activity, the needle hasn’t moved.

Let’s take a Stranger Things marathon, for example, awesome show on Netflix, I admittedly went on a bender with their season two not too long ago, however, once I was done with that, literally in that moment, I finished seven hours, almost straight, of the show, and it’s like I don’t even know what time, three in the morning, four in the morning, and the world hasn’t changed because I’ve consumed that.

Now I guess you could argue, well Russ you can go and you can write a blog and what you’ve learned from Stranger Things and how Stranger Things can, the lessons learned from the upside down. Maybe that could be a good blog, I don’t know, business lessons learned from the upside down, but I didn’t do that. I simply consumed and moved on with my life.

So when we’re in a state of consumption, when we’re in a state where we’re just inwardly focused, this is when we value our time the least.

Now, I’m not saying every waking moment needs to be some super productive, outward experience where you’re always going, going, going, going, going, in fact, a lot of the people who live on that mode all day long end up having breakdowns, they sedate even more with drugs and alcohol. And there is a time where we need to shift from giving and creation to kind of taking a downward shift gear but let’s just agree that when we’re in that state of consumption, we’re really not contributing at all. We’re just there.

When we are suffering or when we are hooked into an addiction, alcohol, porn, social media, we are in that inward state. We are in that state in which we are not creating, and the same idea is we are not valuing our time.

Actually I was meeting with one of our producers, Colton, earlier and we were having a conversation about an event we’re doing next month, and we were talking about today’s episode and I said, sorry I got a hair here on my face, this is a live show, I don’t have a lot of hair, but man, when it’s on my face, that’s distracting, but when you, so the best way to identify an addiction is if it’s consuming a lot of your time. Think about that.

What’s consuming the most amount of your time in life? Very well it could be something very positive. Maybe it’s your kids. You’re like Russ, my kids take up all my time. I have no time left for anything else. Well, you may be addicted to being with your kids and the joy you get out of that might be preventing you from growth in other areas or you might be masking problems at home because you’re so focused on your kids.

Another friend of mine, he is like super-dad, always involved, everything, all the time, every sport, everything, like always, but yet, there are other areas of his life which are growing or flat-lining, they’re not growing, they’re growing stagnant is what I was gonna say, and so he’s consumed by his family and his kids which, don’t get me wrong, it’s amazing and being there for your kids and being a great parent is awesome but it’s at the cost of other areas in his life.

So this conversation of addiction and sobriety, once you get beyond the acute, maybe problem, that you’re here today with, it’s not like all of a sudden, you’ve solved it all, and you never have to think about this again.

I’m honestly thinking about what am I currently addicted to? How can I get sober? But in much different areas than before. For most of my adult life, it was about alcohol and addictions and the sobriety there, but right now it’s like, here’s a great example, I was addicted to managing my own calendar.

I was addicted to the control and the time and making sure I had all that there and what it was doing is, I was consumed by it and it was taking up a ton of my time. I was managing flights and meetings and all this kind of stuff, and so I brought on a personal assistant to help me break free so I’m investing money in her so that I could step away from that.

It doesn’t necessarily mean I can’t do that, I have to still have some sort of say in it, but now my time is being able to be focused elsewhere, in creation, outlining the show, which I’ve been doing the past couple episodes a little bit better, and making sure that I’m focused on the right things.

So, with addiction and valuing your time, it’s intrinsically related. Now, in my book, The Sober Entrepreneur, you can get a free copy, soberentrepreneur.com, just pay for shipping. There’s this really, actually terribly, drawn-out graph that I’m gonna re-create here.

It’s in chapter two and the title of the graph is called Do the Math because when you actually break down time and the time involved with your addictions, it’s startling how much time we spent and that’s being consumed by these things. So we’re gonna talk about drinking and alcohol today, but you can substitute any other addiction you could have into this equation, whether it’s Netflix, whether it is being number one mom or dad for all the sports teams for your kids, whether it is a dysfunctional business that’s just consuming you day in and day out.

And so, with drinking, I kind of have this grid here. Oh, blue, I didn’t know it was gonna be blue, well we’re gonna go with blue, and there’s really kind of three columns here. There’s kind of the, what I call, low and medium and high and in the book I actually, you’ll see why here in a second, I call this solo, social and party time.

So what these columns represent is just the level in which you’re addicted or the level of the amount of time you’re dedicating to yourself, so in alcohol, and with drinking, this is like, I’m just drinking by myself, I’m not hurting anyone, I’m just having a cocktail or two after work, no big deal.

Social means, hey, we’re gonna go for happy hour, we’re gonna hang out, maybe it’s a tailgate, some other, someone’s party.

And then party time, party time, New Year’s Eve, a trip to Vegas, bachelor party, whatever it might be.

So here’s one axis. Now the other axis is before, during, and after. So this is the amount of time that is required, and we’ll have a fourth one down here total. Colton, my… You’ve got it covered? We have picture in picture, I want to make sure it’s not blocked out here.

So anyway, I’m gonna zoom back in, I don’t like it, we’re gonna do it like this. So here we go, here’s our graph. So let’s just take drinking. So before you’re drinking, there’s an amount of time involved with drinking. You gotta go get the drinks, you’re thinking about it, and by the way, time just doesn’t mean in the actual act, it’s the mental bandwidth or the planning or the coordination or even just thinking about it on your own.

So with solo, we say, that’s gonna be about 30 minutes, and then maybe you’re drinking and, let’s say, there’s about an hour, or actually let’s say two hours that’s involved, you know, you have a couple drinks, that whole experience is about two hours, and then after, the effects, the after you’re done drinking, kind of what you doing with your little buzz, do you have three or four drinks, wherever it might be, we’re gonna say that’s two hours.

Now with social, kicks it up a notch. You know with social, say for social, we’re gonna prep for it for one hour and then the actual event itself is about three hours, you’re going from five to eight, that happy hour, and then afterwards, from basically when you’re done to when you go to bed, so we’re gonna put another three hours on top of that. Actually, we’re gonna add a fourth hour ’cause you’re kind of up late, you’re on Facebook, you’re just not getting to sleep ’cause you’ve been drinking.

Now with party time, I mean the sky’s the limit here. This is probably a low estimate, at least it would be for me back in my day, but we have two hours, five hours and then let’s say a 12 hour recovery time, which honestly, as you get older, this could truly be 24 hours, depending on what your event is, but as we total these up, we have 19 hours, we have eight hours, and we have four and 1/2 hours.

I want you to think about this. One social experience drinking could be a full day’s worth of work, involved in all the ceremony and the recovery and everything. I know, if you’re watching this, and you’ve been a partier or drinker, this is definitely a low estimate. This could be 24 to 48 hours that you’re losing in terms of the recovery, the distraction, the mental dip, the emotional depression you go through, and even if you’re just taking it super easy, even still, just three to four or five hours could be consumed and allocated to the habit or addiction.

Now, this could be a little bit more, it could be a little bit less. Joints, porn, working out, whatever, it doesn’t matter, the scale, but this frame exists for every addiction that’s out there. Now when you look at this, what is your time worth when you’re willing to spend eight hours of your time inwardly focused on you and maybe the peripheral around you, of the party, what you’re doing, to be left with literally nothing at the end of that. Where is the math on that? I don’t even get that.

Now there are religious, social, moral reasons why you should quit drinking or you should break free from your addiction but this alone is the game over, that was a pen, mic drop, case for it, and if you don’t believe me, look at someone who’s a regular consumer of their addiction and you’ll see someone who frequently complains about time or lack thereof, money or lack thereof, and stress or lack thereof.

Well, spoiler alert, these things can be tackled without a doubt if you have a focus on them in which you’re proactively going after them.

You want to create more time? There it is right there. You wanna have more money or make more money? Well, the literal not spending money on drinks is one thing but if you focus your extra time into a business or entrepreneurship to leverage up your income, there you go, you have more money. You wanna be fully in control of your life? You manage your addiction and you conquer your addiction and guess what? You’ll have more time for things like meditation.

You’ll have more money for things that matter, like experiences, working out, whatever it might be that you can use to curb your stress and, a funny thing happens, you start to feel more in control with your life and this naturally goes down.
